I am incredibly grateful to the Egyptian Pelvis, Hip and Knee Society (EPHAKS) for allowing me to participate in the prestigious AAHKS fellowship program. This experience has been nothing short of transformative, both personally and professionally. During my fellowship, I had the privilege of training at two esteemed centers for joint replacement surgery in the United States.
First, in October 2024, I travelled to Miami University in Florida, where I worked alongside Dr. Victor Hernandez, a renowned expert in arthroplasty and a member of the prestigious Hip Society. I also enjoyed learning from Dr. Michele D'Appuzo, the program director. Together, they provided invaluable mentorship and guidance.
My time in Miami was filled with hands-on experience in a wide range of procedures, including:
• Primary total knee replacement
• Hip replacement through the direct anterior approach
• Unicompartmental knee replacement
• Patellofemoral replacement
• Revision hip and knee surgery
I was particularly impressed by cutting-edge robotic technology in joint replacement surgery, which holds tremendous potential for improving patient outcomes.
Next, in November 2024, I travelled to Ohio to train with Dr. Adolph Lombardi, a world-renowned surgeon and designer of innovative implants like the Vanguard knee and Taperloc complete hip systems. Dr. Lombardi is a past president of both the Hip Society and the Knee Society, and his expertise in revision surgery is unparalleled.
During my time with Dr. Lombardi, I gained valuable experience in:
• Revision hip and knee surgery
• Primary knee and hip replacement
• Partial knee replacement (lateral and medial)
I also learned about the latest guidelines and methodologies for managing periprosthetic joint infection, a complex and challenging issue in orthopaedic surgery.
Following the fellowship, I attended the AAHKS annual conference in Dallas, Texas, for 4 days. This was an incredible experience, where I had the opportunity to connect with over 5000 orthopaedic surgeons from around the world and gain insights into the latest advancements in joint replacement surgery.
Since returning to Egypt, I have been eager to apply the knowledge and skills I gained during my fellowship. I have already implemented new techniques and protocols in my practice and am committed to providing my patients with the highest quality of care.
The AAHKS fellowship has enhanced my surgical skills and broadened my perspective on orthopaedic care. I am particularly grateful to learn from world-renowned experts and witness firsthand the latest advancements in joint replacement surgery.
I believe that this experience will catalyze my continued professional growth and development. I am committed to sharing my knowledge with my colleagues and contributing to advancing orthopaedic care in Egypt.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to EPHAKS for making this incredible opportunity possible. Your support has been instrumental in my professional development, and I am honoured to be a part of the EPHAKS community. I encourage all eligible orthopaedic surgeons in Egypt to apply for the EPHAKS fellowship program. It is an invaluable experience that will undoubtedly enhance your skills and broaden your horizons.
